I went to my local DTS to get prices today for gearing my dana 30 front and 8.25 rear to either 4.10 or 4.56, they are the same price he said. They told me oem suggested gears and everything out the door for about $1300 or cheaper aftermarket gears for $1200.
My question is that about right or should I try a smaller local shops. I know they are good service but I have not dealt with another place befor. Also has anyone had bad experiencea with the 8.25 just for a dd? Thats all it is for me right now and hauling some tools.

Reasonable price for parts & labor. A few years back it cost me $850 parts + labor for a rear end in a CJ.
A smaller, cheaper shop may only save you $200 at best. So, if this place is a good shop and you might be back for other work, the <$200 is worth it IMO.
And the 8.25 is a great axle for most Xj needs unless you are doing something extreme.

The price sounds pretty decent for gear for the front and rear diff. I have owned 5 Cherokee's and 3 of the 5 had the 8.25 rear end and I never had any issues and I put A TON of miles on all of my Jeeps as long as you take care of them and change the fluids with GOOD QUALITY synthetic gear lube.
