Default Preferred types of fluids, filters, & ...

I am hesitant to start a thread about oil, filter and other maintenance products because it seems everyone has their own opinion, but I'm afraid I might miss something important if I don't. My motorcycle takes very specific fluids (e.g., silicate and phospate free coolant to not destroy the water pump, etc.) so I want to make sure I'm using the best product when time comes to do a complete tune-up on a late 90's XJ with A/T. That being said what _____ do you use? (NOTE: I can read the manual, so please only comment if you have found products that are better than those specified in the book).

Brake fluid (brand and dot number)
Motor Oil
Coolant
Transmission fluid
Power Steering fluid
Differential oil
Transfer Case fluid
Axle Fluid
Air Filters

Oil Filter
Fuel Filter

What year, eh? Well I'm not quite sure since I'm hoping to get my rig shortly. There just aint much selection when you live in Wyoming. (Sigh)

I'm looking at any XJ 94 to 01, although I prefer the 96-99. Doesn't help much I bet. I've been checking the poster's profile to know what year they have.

Do what you want.. But you missed the point... The FSM pre-Chryco calls for Dex II/III. Chryco bought Jeep in August 1988, so there are at a minimum 4 years of XJ's before Chryco influence(and accountants) took over.

From the 88 FSM....
Required Lubricant:
Jeep Automatic Transmission Fluid or the equivalent marked Dexron II

Not a single mention of Chryco's ATF+x anywhere in the FSM....

well i have a 93 and its a 93 FSM.

novak's site states that ATF is used in the tcases.

http://novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm

4x4xplor's site also calls for ATF+3

I've worked at Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealers since 1978 and back then our ATF was Dexron. When lock-up converters came out Chryco added friction modifiers to Dexron and called it ATF+. When electronic trans became popular and broke often, it was determined to be caused by more heat than the fluid could stand so the formula was changed to tolerate more heat (ATF+2) and more heat (ATF+3) and more heat (ATF+4). The transfer case doesn't have clutches so doesn't need friction modifiers and doesn't run hot enough to need ATF+ whatever. So what I'm saying is Dexron is what's recomended for the AW4 trans and can also be used in your transfer case, but ATF+2,3, or 4 will also work. That being said, Grand Cherokee guys need to check their owners manual as some full time systems do have clutches and require ATF+4 to prevent chatter.

To add on this subject........at the begining of 2008 all Dextron III products were superceeded (sp) by the ATF+4 specification. I work at an extremley busy Lube shop, and also being the best in our town. It's not a run of the mill Grease Monkey or Jiffy Lube. It is private owned and very well maintained. We made a complete changeover at the first of the year and now only use Dextron III products for topping off power steering in Fords. Anything Pre-96 you can use DexIII but after you should use ATF+4 or equivlent, in the Trans and transfer case.

Amsoil full syn FTW! For oil filters I run Wix or Napa Gold which is identical. Right now I have a K&N in my Jeep, was there when I bought it, when I do a tune up soon I will be getting the Amsoil air filter for it.
