In the front run either a manual ( selectable ) locker, or a TruTrack if you want or need a traction enhanced differential. I guess you could also run a LSD, although I'm not crazy about them some people like them.

I had one in my Liberty 8.25 for about 3 years with no issues at all. You will notice it clicking once in a while when you go around a sharp corner but, once you learn how it operates and you adjust your driving a bit, you will actually forget it's there. Until you are off road of course.

I'm planning on running them or another lunch box locker in my axles as they are simple installs. I wheel with a number of guys who have them and no major complaints from anyone.

"We" was in reference to "our" XJ, not "all" XJs........and we all presumed u have a 4X4 since u said "want to put one in the front of my XJ". I thought I read in the install instructions that the No-Slip model was not recommended in front, maybe I'm mistaken, maybe the Lock Right model is recommended for the front, again, maybe I'm all wet, wouldn't be the 1st time, won't be the last. One thing I, we, know for sure, one locked rear diff is way better than two open diffs any day of the week.

Basically a lunchbox locker is unit that replaces the spider gears. Usually u don't have to mess with the ring & pinion settings (shims, backlash, press bearings, etc.). Most lunchbox lockers are a fairly simple 2 hour install. 1st pic is stock rear Chry 8.25 open diff, 2nd pic is PowerTrax No-Slip brand locking diff installed.

The PowerTrax No-Slip model/brand by Richmond Gear is a little more sophisticated in that it DOES NOT make a clicking/ratcheting sound while in a turn.......most others do.
