Hi all. I'm a new member. I have a 2000 cherokee sport, It's the second one I've owned. On both jeeps, the passanger and rear windows have started operating on an intermittent basis. They can always be opened a closed from the driver's master control box but the individual toggle switches on the passanger side dorr and the rear doors work sometimes and sometimes not....more often not. Sometimes I can get them to work by pounding with my fist on the driver's side controller. This leads me to believe that it has to do with the wiring in the box. I also suspect that it might speciffically be the on/off child saftey switch. Since I've had this problem with 2 Jeeps, I'm guessing this is a fairly common problem. Am I correct? And will I need to replace the whole control box or is there another way to fix the wiring? Or could it be something entirely different. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

The fact that all the power door accessories are working when they want to leads me to the driver side master. If it was one door acting up, I'd likely look at the individual door controls. But, you say all the other 3 doors are acting up. This sounds like the master is failing. I have an issue with my '98 where the windows on the other 3 doors will not work all of the time. I have narrowed it down to the window lock button on the master. If I press it repeatedly, the windows start operating again. I'll have to round up a replacement myself.

I agree that it's probably the window lock button. The question is: can you fix the button or do you have to replace the whole control unit? I have a feeling that this is a fairly common problem and some people on here have fixed this one before. I hope we hear from them.

All of the control wires for the locks run through the rubber tube that runs from the drivers door to the frame. Peel the tube out of the frame and check for broken wires, you may have to peel the tube out of the door too. If you find broken or frayed wires you should solder them together and shrink tube them as opening and closing the door can loosen the connections again. Opening and closing the door over the years is what breaks the wires in the first place.
If the wires are good inside the tube you may have a problem (on some models, not sure which) with the wire harness that runs under the carpet right where you rest your feet. For some reason Chrysler engineers thought it would be a good idea to run a wire harness right where you rest your feet. You might have to peel the carpet back so you can inspect those wires.

The window lock button crapping out is a pretty common problem. There's a writeup on here about bypassing it, as well as a writeup on taking apart the switch and cleaning everything out to get it working again. I found the latter one after I already got a new switch, or I would have tried it with my old one. If I was still child and care free I would have bypassed it, but with a curuous 2 year old I wanted it to work.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help. I found a thread on here which shows how to bypass the "window lock" switch. It was cheap, easy and works like a charm. Thanks all!
