Question Power window issue on my 1998, please help!

I just purchased my first Jeep and I am loving it so far, except it has a power window issue that I just can't figure out.

Right now ONLY the drivers side window controls work.
All passenger windows do not light up, nor work.
When I push the window lock switch the drivers side controls all go out and window switches don't work at all.
Power door locks not affected, and work fine.

Any help is much appreciated!

most likely it is a bad master switch. the switch in your drivers door is malfunctioning. from what i understand it is a common problem. i have a 2000 and it is doing the same thing. i picked up a new switch from the JY the other day for 5 bucks and once i have the time to put it in hopefully it solves the problem. ill let you know if it works.

Mine was doing the same thing awhile back. I ran across this over on naxja and it fixed my problem. Might be worth a shot before you buy a new master switch.

That's a great write-up, but why use another piece of wire to splice those two together? Why not just use that same pigtail connector and splice the two wires directly?

Hey, thanks for the tip!!! I just went out and tried it on my 98, and it works for the first time in years. I did just twist the two wires together and soldered them. Thanks and, the wife will be happy for awhile anyways

Unhappy

Well I followed the write up, did it perfectly, and when I went to try it the power windows didn't work AT ALL. The lights on the buttons were off as well. Pressing the window lock switch did nothing, so it seems somehow this disabled my power windows completely....

Any ideas?

On mine the drivers switch worked all the windows, but that was the only switch that worked regardless the position of the window lock out switch. This fix worked great.

First, undo that splice and see if the driver's side works again. If not you could have blown a fuse.

Next, pop off your driver's side door panel. Mine did the same thing and I thought I would have to try the splice trick shown in a few threads, but when I replaced my speakers I found the top-most electrical connector inside the door panel had been disconnected. Plugged it back in and checked all the windows, they now all work perfectly. My wife was extra happy with me since I had to roll her window down and up for two months since we bought the thing. My child-safety lock works now too, so I can still take away window-privileges from my wife and friends when I want.

I took mine apart(actual switch) and used electronics cleaner and blew out a ton of dirt and sand. I hooked it back up and it works going on two years now. If you need to ebay lists the master switches from time to time and TeamCherokee.com but they are pricey.

I dont know if my 94 XJ is the same but it had the same problem. There was a broken wire in the harness under the drivers carpet which you are always standing on. Found it ,fixed it, solved the problem..Good luck

Cool

Just a little advice gents. The most common issue I see in our shop is what you are discussing . Take a good look inside the wiring sock on the drivers door before you replace or splice any wires. The driver door window module/switch contains both the power and the ground distribution for ALL the windows. Inside the door sock(black rubber slinky between door and jam) you will more than likely find 1 if not 2 broken wires and I would not be at all surprised if the 16 guage black wire was broken. The other is the orange with red strip(don't know why but those two seem to always be the ones I find) Give it try.
