What's the difference between 91-96 and 97-01 power steering pumps? I'm looking to order one for my 96, but I've noticed that catalogs aren't always right for the 96 models. My 96 has the same brackets that are on 97+ XJ's (all stamped steel), whereas a 94 uses an aluminum rear bracket and a stamped steel front bracket. I tried putting a junkyard 94 pump in my 96 and it wouldn't fit. Do the 96's take the same power steering pump as the 97+ 4.0L's, or is PSC right and I should order the pump for 91-96 XJ's?

 

If you say your brackets are the same as 97+ and you tried a pump for earlier years that didn't fit, I think you answered your own question?

Sounds like 97+ would be your choice but I have no specific experience with the PS pumps for 96, it's a mixed year when it comes to parts.

 

I think I did, but supposedly the only difference is the hose threads and every website says 96 down are the same. Oh well, I just ordered a PSC1205 that was on sale. It’s listed for 97+ TJ’s but supposedly it’s interchangeable with XJ’s according to a lot of different sources. There’s so many pump part numbers and conflicting information out there.
