Default Power Steering pump replacement question

I just purchased a 1991 Cherokee 4.0L 4x4 (240k miles) this past week. Its power steering pump leaks and steering is very difficult (and its noisy). My cherokee has 32 inch all terrains and a 3-4.5 lift. My question is this: Should I replace the pump with a stock replacement pump or should I get a high performance pump? I talked to a guy at a 4x4 show this weekend and he said that I if I went with the high performance pump that I should also replace the steering box, since it the extra flow would probably be too much for the stock steering box and blow the seals on it. He also said that my tires and lift were probably not too much for a stock replacement.

I want to do this soon so any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

It will probably be cheaper to get a stock replacement pump and will have some kind of warranty .
note: the amc & mopar pumps are the same with different fluid caps, so if the D.A gives you the "wrong" pump !

and welcome to CF

Default Is the power steering pump the only thing I need to replace

I've also noticed that the steering is very noisy when its cold and sometimes when I try to turn tightly the Part Time light flickers on and off. The part time light doesn't go on when I'm in 4h or 4L... only when I turn the wheel hard to edges.

Any ideas on what else, if anything, I should be looking at in addition to the pump?

If you have the command trac front disconnect axle
check the vacuum hoses located on the right side of the axle. then there is a vacuum activated switch on the right rear of the engine compartment that has a vacuum hose and one wire coming from it ,that is for the light, it looks like a capacitor maybe a short or vac leak
heres a diagram

I still have occasional problems with the disco axle, there is a kit to eliminate the vacuum/shift motor problems with a cable kit that offers great flexibility - I recommend this upgrade

stock pump will do fine.
if you are going to be wheeling lots, you may want to look into a better steering box.

Thanks both of you for the information. I'll be using a stock pump for now. And I'll examine that vacuum connection while I work on the bearings and brakes this weekend.
