Default power steering problems

I have a 1990 Jeep cherokee laredo. The power steering went out.
We have replaced the power steering pump several times.
We were told to replace steering gear box. First one did not work.
We just put in the 2nd gear box.
We have replaced the lines.
It steers evenly both ways, but it steers very hard.
Would adjusting the steering gear make any difference.
We are at a lost

I hope you are not buying your parts at AutoZone.

Did you bleed the power steering of air?

I'll second that question.
Also, do you get any weird noise (okay, additional weird noise) from under the hood when turning the steering wheel, especially to the limits?

The pump is from Autozone, the gear box, the first one was from Autozone, I made my husband buy the 2nd one from jeep.
He read a bit more and found out he didn't bleed system correctly so we will be working on that tonight. I hope that's it. If it's another bad pump, we will replace it with one from jeep. It does make a noise when you steer it. It makes the noise before the limits.
I will post and let know if we get it fixed

Buy your parts from NAPA. Autozone is notorious for sub-standard re-built parts, as well as poorly manufactured "new" parts. Buying new parts from Jeep is gold standard, of course, but you can get equally good parts from NAPA usually for less money. Ask your husband to talk to the NAPA store manager about establishing a "commercial" account, and tell him that y'all will buy all your parts from that store exclusively. Tell him you want to know about any sales, discount prices, etc. You want to establish a personal relationship with your parts supplier. Even if NAPA's price is a few dollars more expensive than some place like AutoZone, it's worth it to get quality parts, and the correct part every time.

Of course, AutoZone doesn't screw up every single time. You may get good parts 80% of the time, or even more. But I don't want to roll the dice every time I put a new steering pump (or whatever) on my Cherokee. When it comes to brake parts, I absolutely insist on NAPA or Jeep.

Buy your husband a Haynes repair manual for your model Jeep and ask him to please use it. Do you have kids? Tell him you trust his mechanic ability, but you would feel a lot safer and more protected if he would go by the manual. "It's more professional." You can get one at NAPA, or mail order from a bunch of places. Try 4WD.com. By phone 1-800-914-0021. They cost $14.99.

Hope it's just air trapped in the system.
I was getting really funny noises for a while, thought it was the pump. Turned out the guy who replaced a cracked hose didn't bleed everything properly. A manual certainly can't hurt

We have several manuals, Haynes, Chilton, and service manual from ebay, but getting my husband to look at them is another thing haha. We just got a new pump from Summit racing. It still doesn't quite steer as freely as it should. I am hoping it is air in the lines still. So we will try again tonight. I agree with you on Auto zone. totally Autozone brake parts terrify me, Bought so many bad calipers. Finally took my jeep to mechanic and found out that was why I kept having brake failure.
Thanks everyone for your advice.

May need the box adjusted. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/s...riteup-498155/ This write up is for tightening, I would loosen it.
