i have a 1998 jeep cherokee. recently the side view mirrors stopped working, i checked the fuses and it is not that. does anyone know what this could be? and is there a cheap way to fix it? thank you

 

First, check the selector switch and make sure its not in "LOCK" (center) between dr side and pass side.

Since you stated you checked fuse, the next item to check is the switch.
Time to get out the multi-tester.

Check to see if you are getting power to switch.
And if you are then mostlikely the switch is bad,
IF not...the trouble is either in the console or under dash.

Since you have the multi-tester out..double-check the fuse for continuity.

 

ok i've figured out it works when the car is running... is it supposed to be like that or is that a problem?

 

They should only work with the ignition 'On' or turned back one settings to Aux.
Same as the electric windows.

 

We learn that the mirrors are not on the aux setting on the older years just the "on" setting of the ignition switch. Not real sure when this changed. But a buddy who has an 86 said his only work with the key in the "on" position.
