My 98 XJ has had this problem for a while. This is the description of the problem:
The power locks sometimes switch by itself and all the doors lock. This happens mostly while the vehicle is driving. It is not a consistent repeatable issue but it comes and goes. It appears to me that in humid days this can happen more consistently, but it is not scientific.
This is what I found so far:
- The power locks work fine (all 5 doors) using the remote.
- The button that locks the doors on the driver side (in the switch panel with the window controls too) is faulty. It always work to open the locks (push left), but it almost never works to lock the doors (push right). Sometimes it works to close, too. But very rarely and it goes away after a bit.
- The passenger side lock button works fine in both directions.
- I checked the wires in the door articulation on both the driver and the passenger side and found no issues. all wires perfectly intact.
- I removed and cleaned both window switch panels (the black ones in the door handle) but this did not solve the issue.
The same thing was happening in my 2000. It was driving me crazy on a long trip, so I ended up posting here from my phone to ask for the location of the fuse I could remove to stop it, lest I get fed up and set the thing on fire. I haven't put the fuse back since.
I'll be following this thread. If you figure it out, please post what you do to fix it.
Yesterday I removed the switch panel in the driver door and tested it. The lock switch is connected to the orange/black wire (see picture below).
The switch in the panel was working properly as I could see the signal coming on and off at the connector when I was switching the switch.
Therefore my assumption is that the issue might be with that wire.
However, the switch on the passenger side is working properly.
