I hope i find some answers with you... so let me try to explain..
when i bought my xj the fob to open the doors was working fine, you press the button the doors unlock/lock, but some time pass and the problems start, when the doors are locked i push the open button and nothing happens, then i open the door with the key and then press the unlock button and opens all the doors, the thing is, when the doors are locked i always need to open one door, (latch door won't do).. even if i have a open window it wont work.. open a door and ok it works fine even at 10 meters apart, it will work too if i open the door with key, close the door, press lock button, step away from the jeep, press the unlock button and it works, but only for 1 minute or so.. does anyone know what could it be? the batteries are fine and at a local key store they tested the signal from the fob and it was ok.. by the way i only have one fob...

What year is you XJ? There are two different remote lock systems, '96 and older use the old AMC IR system, while '97+ use the Chrysler RF system.
I had to buy a new fob for my 99 after I bought it, when I got it I didn't even know it had power locks don't guess the fellow I bought it from did either. When I ordered a build sheet I noticed it came equipped with them so I took it to a dealer and bought a new fob and had it programmed. It looks nothing like the fob in your photo but that means nothing I guess.
Mine works fine but can be a bit finicky, usually only when my wife drives it she says that it will not lock all the time for her, but always unlocks.
I once did go to the dealer but not the electrician know from identical problems or was interested to find a answer to me, so yeah... i don't know about your model but mine with the key only opens the door i put the key on.. to open the other doors i need to or press the unlock button on the fob or on the door, what really grinds my gears is that after opening one door even the back ones the remote works just fine...
