power brake ploblems

not sure what to check. my dads 1987 jeep Cherokee has a brake pedal that is hard for the first 1/4inch of travel then all the brakes are there super soft pedal if your not used to it you will hit the steering wheel. any help

So... The pedal is initially really hard to press, an there is no braking. Then the pedal suddenly goes soft and the brakes rapidly apply, correct?

A hard brake pedal is usually caused by a bad vacuum check valve. At least in my experiences with them going bad. Make sure that it isn't sticking. BTW if your not sure where it is. It's the one on the brake booster that has the hose connected to the manifold.
