Default Possible fuel filter and trans issue?

So I've been haveing a couple little issues while driving
First my engine has been feeling like its dying and then springing back to life its not all the time but more frequent then id like and was told it could be my fuel filter
Could it be something else how do I check the filter?

Next the other day after a short 20 minute ride my trans felt like it was slipping
Engine would rev up but didn't really move
Checked my fluid when I got home and it was full but a lil browner
Should I do a change of fluid and what else would I need gasket? Screen?etc
Or does anyone have any other suggestions on either
Thanks for all help

It does sound like it could be a fuel delivery issue. I'd say the first thing to do is get it on a code reader and see if that gives you a direction. Even of CEL isn't on, there may be a code stored in there. If your rockin a 96 XJ then I think you have an inline (as opposed to an in-tank) filter so checking it is pretty easy. The other things I'd look at:
Ignition system: good battery, terminals and grounds? What about the alt.? You should get it and the battery load tested (any good garage should do it for free)
Things like the TPS, IAC, o2's, CPS, plugs/wires, cap/rotor, ECM, MAP, etc. need to be checked, too.

The slipping tranny thing I'd say you need new fluid. How many miles on her, btw? You need to be a little leery of older trannys... If you do swap fluid make real sure there's nothing in he old fluid like metal shavings. Check radiator fluid as well and consider a good flush of the coolant system while your at it.. Idk man, good luck!

I know that the battery and plugs and wires and alt are new...coolant is new as of last year
My CEL is always on and haven't had a chance to have it checked yet but that's on my list its on cuz I did a motor swap and I think my o2's need some cleaning
I hope its a inline that'd make things a lot easier
And the tranny has 88000 miles on it

I think a cap and rotor are due next thou
its hard putting new parts on this motor cuz I'm trying to rebuild the original
