Default Pops out of 2WD

I have a 89 XJ and when I hit a bump it will pop out of what I assume is 2WD. It makes a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound until you pull over and put it in neutral then it will drive again. I checked the manual and made the adjustment to the lever, but it continues on. Is this simply a worn out lever mechanism ( the 2&4wheel selector ) or is there a problem with the transfer case???

well something is wrong if you have to have the t-case selector in neutral to drive.

What I meant by neutral was the driveline. The auto trans selector not the 2-4 Wheel selector.

Longtravel, If you've adjusted the lever correctly and it's still popping out of 2WD, I'd say you have are a victim of too many shifts on the fly. I know the owner's manual says these things are shift on the fly and yous is probably just worn out. I alway make sure I'm not going any faster than 20-30 mph when I go from 2HI to 4HI. I'm just old school and I grew up watching my Dad always stop when he shifted his old chevys into 4WD.

Unfortunately, most likely the gears........You did say it just randomly pops out when you go over bumps, right?? Cause mine is tight as a...well, you know. Going from a Toyletta to a Jeep product. The transfer case in my XJ seems to be really tight and hard to shift. I just figured that was the way Jeeps are.
