Just to put it out there...I had the same issue that was intermittent, right before the u joint failed at the rear axle and (somehow) broke the pinion loose on the d35, whomp, bang ping, pong, Bing, boom. I have a picture of the u joint somewhere but suffice to say it Had 1 ear left that wasn't cut in half. And all I heard was those sounds...

**** might as well replace them then. Wont hurt seeing as everything on the XJ is stock from 89 it seems in including the shocks lol.

Congrats mystery solved! U joint was wore out on one of the posts. Any idea why it would be just one of them to do this?

Lack of grease and beating on them are usually what leads to their demise
