po705 NSS issues and ohm readings
Just remembered another characteristic the dirty NSS on my XJ had. Actually it turned out to be the first symptom. My trans when in the 1-2 position would shift out of 1 into 2 almost immediately. Thought it was normal. After cleaning it now will stay in 1 until 4k rpms which is how it should be.
the switch wiring shows all contacts open in drive. how does the tranny know to shift. contacts shown where shift lever is i guess?
i looks like while driving, all contacts are open?

heres a dumb suggestion strictly to clarify the tranny operation.
since all contacts are open in drive position, the switch does nothing?
so just unplug it and jump the neutral contacts so it would start,,ANYWHERE. or use screwdriver trick!
would the tranny shift normally?
you could still go to park to start safe. probably need rev closed to back up huh?

Starting in '97, the transmission range sensor (NSS) had a contact for drive. The FSM continuity checks chart is wrong.
Here's the correct continuity chart (for 97-01) that I made (D3 is 3rd gear):

And the inside of the 97-01 TRS showing the D (Drive) contact. Contact #3 is power in.

Pre 97 TRS (no D contact):

its clear i dont understand the full reason for this sw. its not just so i can only start safe in park/neut!!
the shifter does something inside the tranny,im used to that. how important is this sw in the tranny operation.
seems like it wont work without it or it would be ez to handle start in park huh?
where can i read about it.?
btw my first "guess" is that my prob is in the sw??
