A couple of weeks ago I put a new class three hitch on my '96 XJ. I saw some wires dangling and blocked it out of my mind. Yesterday I got my new hoppy connector (thanks to reading this forum) and proceeded to take the back left panel off and found this.

so I proceeded to isolate and remove it and here it is. Looks like part #56609 425

Here is a pretty bad pic of the unit: I'm just not crazy about splicing into an open area, if it even still works. The relays (or whatever they were had been rapped and zip tied in a block of grey foam. This was a Maryland State vehicle at one time. Port police or something like that.

 

Confused on what you're asking and/or concerned about....

 

I can see that lol. Is this the OEM wiring harness for the trailer connector? Someone just blatantly cut it off underneath.

 

I don't think it's the trailer wiring harness. With that being said, I've never had to wire up a trailer plug. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Like you said, it's a state vehicle so it couldn't been for some secret cop spy equipment or whatever.
