This is a Renix right?

Hmm..replaced valve cover gasket huh?
Have you checked and cleaned all your grounds? How about that one on the back off the head? You were working right there so it could of gotten bumped/lossened or something?
Take a wire brush or sand paper and clean all your grounds!
Also check the plug on the alternator...I started mine with that unplugged and all my stuff was super dim..worth a shot lol.

If you can't get it to turn over after you replace the CPS, I would look under the dash..Check all fuses...pull them and inspect them & the fuse box itself. Also pull your ecu..it takes about 15 minutes..3 bolts and unclip the 2 connectors. Remove the lid of it and smell around for a burnt smell...I recently had the same issue and it was my ecu..I cleaned my plugs, they are only a few months old, new CPS, cleaned all connectors & greased them up, checked fuses and while I was down by the fuses I smelled the burnt smell and sure enough it was the ECU.
Drove fine but then everything went super dim..dim to where my headlights & interior lights didn't look like they were one. Maybe 1-2 minutes later the jeep shut off and wouldn't start again..cranked and sounded healthy, just no fire.
My guess is gonna be the ECU.

Ya I will definitely do that tomorrow. I don't want to get rid of this XJ but if it becomes too much of a hassle I might have to.

Best thing about the renix is how easy they are to fix. I love mine!
Look at my build thread and you'll see how much of a hassle mine has been! Stick with it bud and you'll make it through! The payout of having is jeep is awsome!
If you end up needing a new ecu, go to the junkyards..any Renix ecu will work for ya if you a 5speed..if your an auto, you need to get the auto ecu..5 speeds shouldn't matter. I have a 90 auto ecu in my 88 5speed lol. Works great!

Plug that in!!!

that would explain the lack of spark, if that is what it looks like(ignition coil)

Change your ECU dude. Mine was the same, cranked but no spark at the coil! Sounded healthy cranking but wouldn't fire up.
Changed ECU and first try she fired like a champ.

Ecu is next to the steering column. You can get a remanufactured one at rockauto.

How does it look? And is it in the engine or under the dash? And is there a way to test the icm (ignition control module) ?

Under the dash right side of the column. Google how to test the icm. You can check certain resistances.
