Default Please help guys

The situation,

I have a 89 Cherokee Laredo with a d35 rear and a d30 front my front is a HP stock axle, i blew the pinion in the front axle, my buddy had a 96 Cherokee Laredo also , his had a d30 HP front axle, i got it off of him cheap and im in the middle of installing, am i going to be safe with the ratios are they going to be different? i just dont want to put in in 4 wd and blow something up,

More than likely if both the heeps were auto it is 3.55 but no one can tell you for sure...you have to find the tag on the diff or count the pinnnion teeth.

Both autos both the same jeeps just one was 7 years newer, its crappy i had to get all new brakes and ended up needing wb , ball joints, and a bunch more to go with me lift, and i spent all my cashola on wheels and tires so if this thing doesnt work im effed

You didnt need to buy all new brake components. You could have used your old knuckles, hubs, rotors and calipers on the newer housing after you installed the new balljoints.

Do the diff covers have the tag on the bolts still? On the right hand corner you'll see a number like 3.55, 3.73 etc.

Also, if your old axle is a CAD type you'll need to plug the vac switch on your transfer.

no tags that ive seen, both axles were identicle on the outside, to the T minus the knuckles and i didnt think about swapping them until it was to late

you will PROBABLY be safe if the jeeps have the same engine and transmission

4.0/AW4 should have 3.55s however some tow package XJ's have 3.73's

4.0/AX-15 will have 3.07s

the 2.5L had different gears tho....to be safe i'd look for a tag and if they aren't there i would compare ring and pinion gear teeth counts

You have the 242 transfer case? That would explain the lack of CAD axle in your vintage.

As stated earlier you'll have to count the ring gear teeth to confirm ratio. But your probably safe if they were both untouched ratios from 4.0/AW4 Jeeps.

BTW, the axleshafts in that 96 axle will be the larger 297 ujointed shafts... again if stock.

so does that mean the ds i have wont work? or are you talking the u joints in the axle shafts?

ah ok , thats no big deal, ive been ordering everything for the axle under 96 anyway since the brakes were all different i just assumed to order the parts for the year the axle came out of

I understand.. completely.

Part of the reason we include some of the info we do in posts is to have the info available in a search.. without having to read 10 threads for the same amount of info. Makes it easier for the next guy..

The 90+ calipers are an upgrade anyway, larger pistons for more stopping power.

yeah luckily it came with the calipers, the rotors and pads were shot, and it sucks because i just did a brake job on my old axle but o well, this has been one heck of a week , installing an axle , lift and a butt load of other parts in this rain storm

hey guys one more thing i just found out, the doner jeep had a 8.25 in the rear does this throw i big kink in my progress???
