Default Please HELP!! engine noise sounds bad

Hey everyone I need help. I have a 2000 xj. I was on my way home the other night and this noise just started out of the blue. It is louder when when the accelerator is pushed. Any help on what it could be would be great. It sounds like it is coming from somewhere near the front of the engine on the spark plug side of the header.

Well to me that sounded like a exhaust manifold either cracked or a bad gasket. With out being there and having the hood open thats what it sounds like to me.

Sounds like a broken piston skirt to me. But could be anything from an exhaust leak to a flexplate bolt that's backed out, hard to say from the video.
Try disconnecting the injector to each cylinder, one by one to see if the noise changes.

Sounds like a spark plug is out to me. Maybe a video with the hood open?

Oh, a 2000....would be pretty tough to pull a plug as a prank!

You can hear an escaping sound in the second video.

Put your hand or a piece of paper in there and see where the puffing is coming from. You can take the oil cap off and see if its spraying oil up or puffing lots of air.

That is an ugly sound

X2. Still makes the same sound as a spark plug out. Shaley, I'm gonna guess you are not a "manly man" with calloused hands. Allot of us would find that in 10 seconds by hand. You might use a tube to your ear, (not too close!), or even a feather or something on a stick to find where that blast of air is coming from. First find left or right, then forward or back.

On the left, (drivers side) you might have a bolt/stud missing from your exhaust manifold. Or that gasket blown seriously out. Or real trouble with the exhaust manifold.

Then if it's on the right find if its a plug or the head gasket. The head gasket is lower than the plugs. (the plugs screw into the head).

Guess it's running smooth enough it's not a plug out. That's what that sounds like though.

from what I hear it sounds like it may be coming out of one if the spark plug cylinders.

pour a little seafoam in the intake and watch for where the smoke comes out.

And by the way, your overflow bottle looks totally empty. It's probably unrelated to your noise but if you don't have an external leak, that is usually a sign of coolant getting into the oil and on a 2000 XJ it usually translates to a cracked head. Been there...

The second vid does seem to be more of an exhaust leak. I would check to see if all of your Intack/Exhaust manifold bolts are tight. The last couple of these inline sixes I have had, had those bolts work themselves lose. Even my 258 inline six did the same thing.
