They call me at 12:30 ( I had to go in late to work for 2 days straight now due to this) and said it was ready, but they recommended I change my belt now, because my old one is now squealing. They said it would be 77 more dollars to do that. So i told them no, because i have a gatorback belt on that jeep and it is designed with teeth so it should never squeal. That is how it is designed and it has never squealed before and if it did they did something to it. I asked if otherwise it was ready. They told me yes and so i had someone take me down there again and when i got there it WASN'T ready. They also tried to charge me 400 dollars instead of the 350 dollars they quoted me (which i thought was a bit much for an alternator change anyways). Found out they were charging me for the diagnostic they previously told me went toward the cost of repair if i got it done there. Told me to come get it tomorrow. I went to the front to the sales office and asked to speak to the owner. I talked to him and he said I would get my quoted price of 350 and pay no more than that and he was going to personally bring it to me. He also agreed that my gatorback belt should not be squealing as it is designed not to.

Guess what................
The jeep broke down again with the same symptoms while they were on the way to bring it to me and had to be taken back to the shop. So still no resolution.
Yep...I kid you not.
There excuse now is possibly the ignition module?? They are going to hook the computer and fuel pressure gauges to it tomorrow and drive it till it quits again. I dunno why they didn't do that to begin with.

No CEL for CPS on a Renix Jeep, not sure if it would throw a code on a '99 but I can tell you this, something is wrong with your Jeep whether it's giving you a code or not. They symptoms you've described are exactly what I had when my CPS gave up. I was at a red light and I felt a little sputter, the light turned green and I drove away. It seemed okay for a few seconds, then it died. I tried restarting but it just cranked and cranked. Sometimes it tried to start but sputtered and died. I let it sit for a couple minutes and it started right up. I immediately drove it home, to within a block and it died again. A friend towed me back to my house (because it refused to start). The next morning it started right up and as soon as I pulled out of the driveway it died.

And I'm not disagreeing with you over the CPS either. I have thought of it already and have mentioned it to the repair shop. They are supposed to be monitoring it.

Please replace your CPS!!
In all the 4.0 engines, the CPS will eventually fail, there r many threads on this.
Your symptoms match a malfunctioning CPS from the start including the prodromes with bucking, cutting out/stalling, your shop did some expensive repair that didnt fix it. And yes, it can malfunction wothout throwing a code.
Have it replaced by a good quality one, aftermarket ones might still be giving you trouble, and leave you with the thought that "that couldnt be it anymore".
So, dont go throwing money at things till after the CPS is changed (even for future reference this will be a good thing).
