I am in the process of putting a 97' 4.0 in my 88' Cherokee and have ran into a problem with the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing for the 88' is too big to fit in the crankshaft of the 97' engine but the pilot bearing for the 97' has too big of and inside diameter. Basically what I need is the o.d. of the 97' and the i.d. of the 88'. How do I get the right pilot bearing? Any help is much appreciated.

*IF* I remember ... I will post a part number for you.
Basically ... it's a standard sized pilot bushing from Napa. All you have to do is give them the OD of the shaft and the ID of the crank bore, and they'll be able to get you a bushing.
You will not be able to run a bearing any longer with that setup.

Napa Balkamp number 615 - 1032
This is an oil-lite pilot bushing. Soak it in oil overnight and install. Install the part number I just gave you and be on your merry way.
You're welcome.
*edit* Didn't know you had the Peugot trans (didn't pay attention to the year too closely). Either way, that P/N should still be good for it ... as it was good on the early AX-15 which should share the same pilot input diameter.

After looking at the picture in the link, the pilot bushing goes in the bigger part of then crank correct? not in the smaller part deeper in the crank where the pilot bearing goes?

I don't know it if it will shrink up, per se.
But I know you don't want a "slip fit" for that bushing. Otherwise it will spin in the bore.
Is it possible your measurements could be off a bit? 90 thou difference tells me something isn't right somewhere. I've used that bearing myself several times in the past and have passed that P/N along to others without a complaint coming back to me.
IIRC ... that's a standard CJ bushing for the V8 motor.

if I was reading there info correctly
you can remove the larger steel bushing and use the bushing fore the older type crank in its place
