Double check that the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) on top of the transmission bell housing was not damaged when reinstalling the engine. If it is not taken out during engine install, it often gets knocked or scraped causing damage to the sensor, wires or both.

Post the year/engine of your XJ. There are significant differences through the years.
For spark and fuel:
1. You need a strong, BLUE snapping spark. Yellow/orange/white indicates a weak spark which may not be strong enough to fire the engine.
2. Fuel. You must TEST fuel pressure. Compare your reading to the factory spec for your particular year/engine XJ.
Good luck!
