you don't want to be driving on dry roads in 4Hi
If you have the 242 transfer case it can be driven in 4hi on any roads
Part time 4Hi on the 242 is the same as fill time on the 231
4Low is pretty much for extreme road conditions or offroading. I've used it once with about 15 inches of snow and ice.
Key is if you feel it binding up, take a look at the conditions and change the transfer case you might be using the wrong gear
Thanks for the info, sounds like greek to me, LOL. How do i determine the 231 vs 242 transfer case. Is there a tag somewhere on it?
I vaguely recall someone had told me years ago that 4L on Jeeps can only be used up to 30mph, is this true?

check your drivers sun visor for recommendations.
part- time is for slippery surfaces
full-time is for all surfaces
4lo is for max pulling power and gear reduction and very slippery surfaces.
When i wheel i use 4lo all the time cuz i like to be able to move slow. Both my cherokees have 242 cases. Part time is usually just for getting out of sticky spots, like stuck in a parking lot and need quick 4 wheel to get out. I use full time most all winter driving in the snow. Usually just around town or on back roads. If you are driving over 50 mph 4 wheel drive is not going to do you any good whatsoever. Only i do use full time in slippery highway conditions while pulling a trailer. The fulltime will keep you straight when you climb the hills on the highway.

Might be on the drivers visor also
Thanks for clearing this question up for me! I do only have the "part time" version.
I never noticed the info at the visor, thanks for making me aware of that. Since this is my wife's jeep, I rarely drive it. Usually in foul weather since she is not that comfortable doing so. We only have had it on the road since summer 2009.

Nobody really cleared up that question for me either but im sure its the same for everyones jeep with that transfer case, it probably only changes when off-roading. No i wouldn't worry about it, i dont ever run with my part time on, i'm usually inn 4-LO, 4-Hi puts too much of a strain on the motor going up hills and going through mud. I try to engage all the 4wd positions at least once every 2 weeks or so to ensure everything stays working properly.
