PAG oil question. new accumulator, compressor, orifice tube
Few months ago, my compressor seized up on vacation and i had to make a bypass pulley for that wasnt made for a jeep. Finally getting around to fixing it because the bypass pulley is eating up my belt because its off center of where it should be.
bought a new compressor, accumulator, and "hose assembly" with orifice tube as the warranty for the compressor says i must replace them for warrenty if it ever went bad. The instructions for the compressor say to NOT drain the oil thats in the compressor. This goes against everything i have read. Also says add 1/2 the pag oil to the suction side of the compressor, and the other 1/2 into the condenser.
couple questions i have are
1. Do i really leave the oil in the compressor?
2. what side is the suction side of the compressor?
3. is the 1/2 and 1/2 method for pag oil the correct way?
also, anyone happen to know the correct amount of pag oil for a 2000 xj system? the FSM says to dump out the oil from the old compressor, measure it, and add to the new compressor... old one is no longer here so i cant do this.

Leave the oil in the compressor it is assebly lube. 6.1 oz is complete amount of oil in system i would cut 1 oz of it out from oil still being in the evaporator and condensor unless you flushed it. I would put 50/50. Some compressors come with the whole amount in them, so you really don't have to split the amount. when you look at the ports in side the compressor one is going to be bigger than the other that is the suction side of the compressor, or one fitting is going to be bigger, discharge side is always going to be smaller fitting or hole on the inside looking in, some even have S and D on the back of the compressor.

Thanks a lot steve97!
just seen on napas site that it says 6oz total. Ill take your advice in taking 1oz off that from what is still in the lines. so 2.5oz in compressor and 2.5 in accumulator.
really appreciate it.
if anyone else can chime in, let me know your thoughts also

Did the a/c over haul this past June on our '98. Flushed evap & cond & blew lots of compressed air thru both. IIRC, FSM says drain & measure the oil in the compressor. New compressor said "shipped without oil". Turned it upside down anyhow & drained a few drops out. Book said add 1/2 of the oil to the accumulator and other 1/2 to the compressor. Must have done something right....34F at the center dash vent.

Sorry, didn't drain the old comp. Book said 8.2 oz of oil total for the system. Since we flushed the evap & cond and all the other parts were new, we added 4.1 oz to the new accumulator and 4.1 oz to the new compressor and off to the shop we went....vacuum pulled and 134a added.
