Water pumps driven by serpentine belts are reverse rotation because they are driven by the back side of the belt.
You don't lol. How about newer = 97+

Well, no question that my '93 is newer than my '85 2.5 I bought new in May '85 and had for ~20 years.

I obviously didn't put a lot of thought into my statement above but am curious as to when they changed the idle pulley arrangement shown in the second diagram which I assume was '97 based on your statement.

Default Update on overheating

Contacted AirTex who manufactures wp's for O'Reilly's, Autozone, and others in the area I live. They have a video that shows the two different wp's for the 4.0L. One is standard and the other reverse rotation. Airtex gave me the part numbers that each auto supply store uses on their products. Checked the wp's at the stores and they say they are reverse rotation, but they are not. To check, I clamped a water hose into the lower radiator hose and removed the thermostat housing and thermostat. Forced water through the block and there appears to be no restriction in the motor or head and I've checked everything else for a restriction. With water standing in the motor at the stat opening, I turned the pulley on the water pump clockwise and water pushed out through the stat opening. But, my pump turns counter clockwise. When I turned it cc-wise, the water level dropped instead of pushing out of the block. So, the wp's that are supposedly reverse rotation are not. At least at my local stores. I'll have this fixed if I can find a true reverse rotation wp.
