Hi there, I am having a overheating issue on my 1996 Cherokee Sport. I have replace the thermostat and had my radiator flushed last November. I am thinking that it is either a relay switch or a sensor. All help is greatly appreciated.

 

After the Radiator was flushed, did you burp the system and get all the air pockets out? Also might want to make sure your electric fan is coming on and that your mechanical fans clutch is engaging once the engine warms up. Theres a number of things that can be wrong thats making your jeep overheat, a little more info would be helpful.

 

How hot is your jeep running - is when at idle or running on the road- do you have hot light or mechanical gauge - does it have water boiling over.Like Coloradoxj88 ask need
more info.

 

I did not do the flush myself, had it done. So yes I would assume that it was burped before I picked it up. I have checked to make sure that the electric fan is coming on and it is. Not sure where the clutch is so I have not checked that. It seems to me that the electric fan is not coming on until about 245 degrees and it was coming on last year at about 220 degrees. Not sure what else to tell you.

 

I got the same issue but I have replaced the thermostat and the water pump and I burped it. When I changed out the pump I replaced the hoses (upper and lower) and flushed out the radiator. When in my drive way it stays around 190 to 210 but once I drive it 3 or so blocks is when it jumps to 240 to 260 I will turn on the heater and it drops to 220. So I can get where I need to. I am at the end of my rope and can't think of what else it might need done. Any info that might work will be greatly appreciated!

 

It runs about 240 to 250 when I am driving it and sometimes it get that hot while idling but sometimes it will run at about 210 while idling. No I have not water boiling over. I have a mechanical gauge. When it gets that hot I can turn on the heater on I can watch the temp go back down to about 215 to 220.

 

I have 2 96xjs..both 4.0s...my wheelin rig was constantly overheating on the trails under 4 low and slow

First---bypass relay / switch on Aux Fan -- create a bypass wire direct to your battery --- run wire thru firewall -- mount a simple on / off switch --- this way you control when secondary fan turns off and on vs heat sensitive switch---

Second -- what is the degree of temp rating on your thermostat? It may be possible you may have sticking thermostat or one that is opening up at a hotter temp...

Third -- turning heater on before hitting center 210 degrees.

Fourth -- u can bypass heater sensor / hoses for hot air in cab.. being summer dont need heater...thus creating constant coolant flow...this one is harder to explain...i learned this technique on the trail...thank goodness i wheeled with mutlple guys that were much more technically inclined that i was...

Anyway...hope these help out...
