Default Overheating 2.5 diesel

Hi Im new to this so bare with me. I bought a 2.5 diesel 1997 cherokee 2 days ok. everything was fine apart from no hot air from heater. This morning it was minus 6 celsius. The jeep started fine and ran fine for about 10 min before check engine light came on and temp gauge soared to the red. It didnt feel like it was over heating after a few mins the gauge dropped back and light went off but then it kept whizzing back up and then dropping off. When I got to work there was some steam coming from expansion bottle. Help!

One of the things I noticed when I blew the head gasket on my 4.0L, Its that the heater was blowing mildy warmish cold air, I cant say this is your problem, but you might want to see if their is oil in your radiator/overflow, and if your exhaust smells sweet, or has excessive moisture.
