Overheated and all oil dumped into expansion tank/cooling system
Hi
2003 grand Cherokee 2.7 diesel
Was driving last night and the belt tensioner snapped, was only a few miles from home so drove it back! It did run hot.
Opened the hood and saw that all the oil made its way into the coolant system, it was coming out of the expansion tank.
Just wondering if there is another way other than through the head or block for the oil to enter the coolant system?
Could the oil push past rings when very hot and be OK after?
Was told to remove the expansion tank + rad & clean oil out, replace tensioner put back together and see what she does?
This happened before to anyone? Did a search can't seem to see anything.
If the heads gone can it be skimmed or is a new head required?
Thanks
I just realised that there is a grand Cherokee section

Only if you have an engine oil cooler that runs through the radiator. Otherwise.... it's not looking good for your engine.
Lost belt = STOP THE CAR IN A SAFE PLACE AND SHUT IT OFF.
Yep should have gotten a tow, I'm new to diesels. It's happen a couple of times to me before with petrol cars and didn't have any issues.
No oil cooler connected to radiator only the auto trans cooler, I will remove the rad tomorrow and flush out, I'll refitt and fill fluids, replace tensioner and see what's happening. Head gasket could would be better that a crack..

I wouldn't bother with all that until I'd tested to see if the head gasket is gone or if there's a cracked block or head.
You will probably just be throwing money away on wishful thinking. There is zero chance that your problem will correct itself.
