Ok whent out and was messing with jeep... Felt the hoses, the bottom hose gets warm first then once the thermostat opens the top hose gets warm. I let the jeep idle once it reached operational temp for 20 minutes (yes i timed it) and the temp stayed right at 190 it didnt move at all, took it out for a drive through the country and it stayed about 180-190, but it is only 25 degrees out but when i got home i left it idle it ook 12 minutes for it to go from 190 - 230. for my fan i have an electric fan and that is all, i do not have a fan hooked up to the motor or anything like that and the electirc fan is always on if the motor is running. I do not understand how i can let it idle for 20 minutes and its fine, but drive it then it then let it idle it overheats...

Something to consider since it cools fine at idle! Did you remove your mechanical fan?

when i bought the jeep it had two electric fans, when i replaced everything i took them out (they were going bad) and only put one electric axuilary fan in. Reading around i think i need another fan clutch or electric to cool my engine. If this is the case wife is goign to flip when i tell her i need another 100$ to fix jeep i can see were i can get the fan clutch from autozone, but they dont sell a fan.. any info on buying a fan...

Craigslist under auto parts look for somebody parting out an xj, or hit your local salvage yard.

I really hope that im not such a dumb ***** that my problem all along has been becuase i dont have 2 fans
i looked at my jeep... i dont see how you could even put a blade fan on the fan spot, it would have to be like a 6" fan there is not enough space to put a very big one in there.. how do i know what fan i need? auto zone is my only option now, i dont want to buy one that is not going to be big enough to cool engine. This is the fan that i put in, would just another one of these be enough to cool jeep or do i need a "special" fan?

Can you take a picture of your current setup? I don't understand why you would only have room for a 6" fan.

That is the factory fan that mounts on the drivers side of the radiator. I would round up the missing parts to reinstall the factory mechanical fan. If you need it running today, then put the setup back in that you had-- you said that it was going bad- but if it limps you by for now thats better than overheating.

As time and funds allow in the future install an electric fan from a newer xj-- it's plug and play and the curved blades are far more efficient .

I was having troubles trying to fit the whole thing in, and dont know how to make them bigger so you can actually see.. so dont know if pics will help any, but here they are

when i say fan wouldnt fit were the fan clutch would mount is not centered with the passanger side of the radiator (best way i can think to discribe it) there is only like 4" till it would hit stuff. the radiator has holes in the bottom that look like a second auxilary fan would fit right in there thats why i was asking if that is waht goes in there. I just dont want to buy the wrong fan and not have it work.

This might be a dumb question........

but might shed some insight to problem....

when you say you were at 230 while driving,,, did you by chance run your heater at full blast?

does the heat come on REAL strong?

when you have the jeep at idle for 5 minutes, like you say, run your heater/defroster at full fan speed.

see if your fluid level goes down in your reservoir.

i know on mine there is a heater control valve ( basically a 5 outlet hose thingy plastic piece that is on the pass side near the engine about cylinder 5 and 6, which diverts hot glycol/water mix from block/radiator to the heater box in the dash)

when mine failed, the engine would run REALLY hot...

just a thought sir.

good luck!
