FWIW- Mine ('96) runs 13-14 degrees advance at hot idle, your numbers are right in the ballpark.
Thats what mine runs too and as high as 33 degrees at 2000 rpm seems to flucuate rather quickly too, does yours?

Personally I think its a flow problem. I have the same issues. But when I press the pedal to get the idle (at a stoplight etc) up to about 1200 rpm it stays cool. It idles normally about 6-700rpm. and after two water pumps and quite a few forum reads of folks swapping out pumps and no good results I wonder if it isnt with something to do with port size?

Found this: http://www.wjjeeps.com/engine.htm
"The standard in-line 6 cylinder engine was significantly re-engineered in 1999. Upgrades included new cylinder heads with reduced-area exhaust ports, new exhaust manifolds, a new 50% more efficient slitter-vane water pump that added two horsepower,"

Why would they re-design the water pump..?

Edit: Additional info. http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums//sh....php?p=1578506

Im taking my pump and seeing if I can match it up to a slitter-vane .

Ok. Opinions needed. Pulled the spark plugs again today and found the #1 and 2 looking like this picture. A greenish tint on the end of the plug and white stuff on the top of the piston. What's this look like to you? I have a new head coming to get rid of the 0331 head could this be the source of all the problems?

First time the plug has looked like this.
