Default Older NP207 in a '96XJ

Don't laugh at me, I'm new here.
I bought a '96 XJ w/ 5 speed and NP231. The transmission was toast. I got a 5 speed from an older XJ but have no reason to believe it was original to that vehicle. It came w/ NP207. I used my bellhousing on the older but good transmission to bring the clutch back to the driver's side. The older NP207 has a geared spedometer cable and a 4 prong vacuum switch, both different from my 231.
My question is this. Can I use the extension housing from my 231 on the 207 and somehow trade out the vacuum switches? I'll lose the vent tube which is on the extension housing of the 207 but on the main case of the 231.
I tried to bolt the 231 to the working transmission, but the input shaft was too short to go through the rear seal of the transmission. All my spline counts are working out so far which is the only thing that's gone right. Both transmissions are 14 spline input and 21 spline output.
Thanks
Andy

Default problem solved

In case anybody else runs into this, I thought I'd share.
Problem: NP 207 in a '96 xj. This TC came with a gear driven, mechanical speedometer cable. My xj wanted an electric speed sensor to run the spedometer and satisfy the ECM. In North Carolina you can't pass inspection if the check engine light is on. The port for the gear is completely different than that on other/newer TCs, so using the speed sensor that was plugged into the dead NP231 isn't an option. No speedometer, no inspection so no registration when 17 yr. old daughter had her first accident after a week on the road. It wasn't pretty.
Solution: I scoured the junkyards. I found a '92 xj. I don't remember what trans it had in it. But it had a speed sensor on it that I could rob parts from. That 1" nut was the same on both my geared speedo and the '92 speed sensor. I removed the top portion of the speed sensor and the bottom of my geared assembly. Combine the 2 and viola! But we're not done yet. Now I've got a 2 prong speed sensor and a 3 holed plug on my '96 wiring harness. Well, I saved the female end from the '92 leaving a couple of inches of wire. Cut off the 3 wire plug on my '96. Butt connect the white to white and the black to the black. NOw I've got speedo working but the ECM still isn't happy and the check engine light is still lit. So, I bared the end of the orange wire thinking maybe it needed to be grounded. With the engine running I grounded the orange wire on teh TC and the engine stalled. But, the check engine light flickered. Another try, same result. So, I held the orange wire on the ground and kept turning the engine over. It wouldn't start, but the light went out for good. Remove the wire from ground and I've got speedo and no check engine light!
I'll get inspection tomorrow and have a long talk with my daughter about safe following distances.
