While Renix does narrow down the year a bit, but there are still differences, like in the 87-88 XJ which have the c-101 connection (a common problem area) as opposed to the 89-90 which don't.
So we really need specific year, engine, trans, and what methods have worked and what tests you have done.

So it's a 90 renix with a 88 harness and a new 90 ecu. The old 90 harness fried up a wire somewhere and burnt the old ecu. Pretty much just hard wire the starter to get it to crank is the only way it starts. So what I have done was refresh all the grounds and I took a test light to the ignition wire on the relay and I took a test light to the red at the steering column
