PICK SOMETHING.
Used peanut oil... it has a higher smoke point... and it makes the crank case smells like french fries!

I have used Mobil 1 and a K&N oil filter every 6k miles since I bought my XJ. So far I have put about 70k miles on it. Oil pressure has always been fine.

The thing with synthetics making the engine leak isn't the oil's fault... Synthetics do a really good job of cleaning the engine... Synthetic oils can stand a higher temperature before breaking down allowing the detergents to do their job. When gunk around the seals prevents the seals from leaking it is only because the detergents in the oil cleans that gunk out. If you did an engine flush the same thing would result.

At least that is what I have heard. It could be utter bull **** but whatever.

Non synthetic oils made today are the bare minimum of lubricating properties possible, oil manufactures are trying to get rid of non-syn oil all together, mobil 1 10w-30, no high mileage, no extended performance, just regular synthetic. at wal mart its $24 for a 5qt. jug. Synthetic oil doesn't burn nearly as much as regular, other synthetic oils are good, but mobil 1 at wal mart is cheaper, and you can go to mobil.com and get every spec on any type of oil they sell, no other company gives you those specs, I am a fan of lucas oils, but they technically DON'T meet ANY auto manufactures oil specifications. Mopar oil filters are well made, decently cheap, but WIX, HASTINGS, or Puralator PURE 1.

Synthetic oils don't cause leaking, that notion came about because synthetic oils don't burn away, so you will have a more full crank case for the duration of the life of the oil, so if your motor had a small leak somewhere, it will leak longer because the level of oil doesn't go down over time.

Oh ya, btw.... most synthetics are similar enough that brand doesn't make a real big difference. I love Mobil1 but I found Pennzoil platinum half price and its been great! Go to motor oil 101 at bobistheoilguy.com if you want the facts about oil.

Synthetic oils don't cause a leak but if there is already a leak it is much less or none with conventional oil because it can basically "clog" up the leak. Syn oil doesn't.

Mobile 1 full synthetic. My Jeep loves it and I love it. For a gallon plus a Wix filter, I spend $30 per change. Cant complain when synthetic is so much better and so inexpensive now. I remember when a full synthetic change at the local garage cost $120 bucks for my buddies Civic about 10 years back.

uhm, this is some totally crazy explanation of this lol.

its already been said why an engine can start a leak from synths, I know if mine starts a leak I will change the seal and never have it their again and thats how it should be.

I'll prolly just stick with house synthetic.
Ive always use synthetic the the 530i engine since I bought it, and yea man 7 years ago I remember paying like $100 for oil lol.

The only additives I feel are worth using ARE: seafoam anywhere, lucus fuel treatment upper cylinder lub, and restore seems to help.
