Default Oil Pressure Sudden Increase

Hi,

I'm not very technical, so if anyone could help me I would appreciate it. I was just trying to figure out if I should worry about an abrupt increase in my oil pressure. It's not in any danger zone yet but has continued to increase over the past several weeks and it's probably double what it usually runs and I need to know what to check. Love my Jeep and don't want to blow the engine or anything. Thanks for your help.

Disregard Post #2.

Without checking the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, we can't know for sure. It's most likely a failing oil pressure gauge sending unit located right above your oil filter. Is it leaking oil out the end where the wire hooks on?

BTW, what brand of oil filter is on there?

It is very common for the sending unit to go bad: I'm batting 0.750 on bad ones. Does it bounce around sometimes? Will it jump from half to full very quickly, or is this just a steady rise over time?

I just had my 98 do the same thing 2 days ago. Like cruiser said verify you oil pressure. Mine was reading what it normally read so that was fine. I changed out the oil sending unit and it took care of the problem.

Thanks to everyone who replied. To: 3278 - it's been pretty much a steady rise over time - If it jumped at all I didn't notice it at the time.
To: cruiser54 - not leaking that I've noticed. I will definitely have the pressure checked manually. Not sure what oil filter is there but will check that also.
Again - Thanks for your help.

OPSU failing creating a 'high' reading is really easy to check: turn your key to RUN without starting the engine. If the oil pressure gauge is any more than zero, you've found the culprit.

It's also a good time to change your oil and spin on a quality filter. Check for chunks and sludge in the oil that comes out

Good ideas, salad. Simple.
