Default Oil pressure fluctuating at speed

Hi Guys,

So this is driving me nuts, my oil pressure isn't constant. Lately when I've been starting my XJ the oil pressure only climbs to about 30 psi on the side streets, which I know is on the lower side, but if I get on it, let it catch about 3k rpm's, it'll bounce up to 44ish. Remember this is before the motor has reached operating temp.

Then even when it's warmed up, and I'm at speed, say 40mph, it'll fluctuate while I'm holding that speed, anywhere from about 25 to 40 psi. Oil level is fine, and to me, I'm not hearing an abnormal sounds. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and it drives me crazy! Idle pressure is right at 20psi, but I have seen it at 10psi but rarely. The pressure still rises once I get on the gas, but like I said, it's not constant at speed.

The jeep only has 88k miles on it but it is 20 years old at this point. Oil is Rotella T6 5w-40, and the oil filter is a Wix 51515.

I know pumps don't create oil pressure the spaces between bearings and such do, but does this sound like an oil pump getting worn out?

Any info is appreciated and my specs are in my sig.

Check the sensor is not bad and needs replaced. Mine did this, replaced the oil pressure sensor and now back to normal.

I actually replaced it not too long ago, but I guess I could give it a try and see if theres a change. However, I don't think it's that.

For a little history, I replaced the valve cover gasket a few weeks back, and everything in the top end looked like new.

Any more input, gents?

I know there a A LOT of oil pressure threads out there, and I'm aware of the fact that my pressure is in the green area for the most part, it's just the inconsistency and fluctuation with my oil pressure that has me asking you experts.

Thanks!
