Default Oil Drain Plug Gasket?

Just pulled my oil drain plug. The plug looks like it has a thick rubber coating built into the head of the plug. Is this simply a melted rubber gasket that has never been changed?
Or, is this drain plug supposed to have a gasket that you reuse time and time again? Usually i use a traditional drain plug with a copper crush gasket.... Can i convert it over by just tearing off the rubber stuff?

It's one of these things.

What do i do with it?

Umm... Did it leak? If not, leave it alone maybe? Yes, some drain plugs have a seal built into the head of the bolt.

Wasn't leaking when i pulled the plug, but that's not to say that it won't fail in the near future.

Usually i replace drain plug gaskets on each oil change. But in this case there is no gasket.... As the rubber seal is becoming soft and kinda deteriorating, i'll just tear it off and use copper. No sense in spending 30 bucks in oil/filter stuff and causing an oil leak b/c i cheaped out on a 50 cent washer.

If your that worried about it get a new drain plug with gasket at auto zone. $3.00 extra dollars is worth an eased mind

It's a nylon seal and it isn't supposed to come off. Unless it's scarred up, leave it alone. If it worries you, get a new drain plug.
