Default Oil change problems, sounds dumb but its got me!

Ok so I have only put about 600 miles on my 98 cherokee sense I bought it. I changed the oil and filter yesterday to get that out of the way...and well I drained the oil very well... I even poored about half a quart of fresh oil through the engine to kinda get some of the old oil out of the oil pan...I changed the filter to a Fram TG16...then I used Castrol high mileage 10w-40 oil...(cuz the jeep has 144k on it)... well here is my issue that kinda blows my mind... and I am very new to the Jeep 4.0 so hopefully someone can help...
Before I changed the oil the motor ran great and smooth... now that I changed it, I have perfect oil pressure and I made sure 5 times that I have the right amount of oil in the engine and I now have an awsome amount of valve train tick... I dont get it ...anybody run into this? any suggestions.. PS this does go almost all the way away once engine is at temp.

Thank you... Tommy

If you just bought and this is the first time you changed the oil I'm guessing the old owner put a little atf fluid in there to quieten down lifter tick [i.e runs like a champ]. But you should be ok my ticks my wrangler ticked its kinda the norm but since youre run 10 40 it shouldn't be to terrible loud.

Yup, I bet if you still have your old oil that you changed sitting around, you can notice the thickness from a heavy duty oil. It goes away when your 4.0 heats up because the internal workings of your motor expand to fill in the gap that was banging around.
Good luck bud. I wouldnt worry about it unless you are taking very long road trips or are wheeling it and need your motor to be 100% reliable.

As long as you do not have a loss of power, and it runs good.. the slight tick is normal. And since it quiets down at temp then next time you change the oil maybe try 15w-40/50? Are you sure it isnt the injectors that are making the noise? You tried using some MMO? I would say use some seafoam, but it is not good to use in the crankcase for more than a few hundred miles.

Im sure its not the injectors... yea sometimes when its cold it wont even do it, other times you can here it....and you cant here it at all when your driving... I was thinking of adding a little Marvel Mystery in to see what that would do...

The only other thing that I can think of, if its not valve lash, is if its maybe because im only running 87octane fuel?? this is the only thing Ive done different other than change the oil, and I just though of it today... I had been putting 97octane in...just because... and well the last time I put gas in I only got 87.... I duno.. well see.

Who cares, man. It's not that big of deal, these engine will run forever if you take care of them. Any engine with allot of miles will make some noises sometimes. Even new engines (tick), my F150 does it. Do regular maintance and it will be OK.

My old 92 used to tick like a time bomb and it ran like a raped ape (lol, too many analogies?). Anyway, its all good, a little noise is good for ya, lol.

Run redline SI-1 fuel injector cleaner.
you are good with the 10w40
I wouldnt put marvel in the oil.
these motors arent too picky..
and the fuel 87 octane is perfect
anything over 87 is a WASTE of MONEY

you DID use 6 qt of oil, right ?

Yea I did... actually was talking to a buddy of mine today from florida (has had like 20 jeeps), and he said to try running some injector cleaner, maybe a stuck valve or something stupid like that... you never know... but the good part is these engines are like a peice of cake.. compared to my Supra turbo.. lol... and hey if it blows up, 1200 bucks ill just drop a jasper in there HAHA

Well on thursday when im off work im going to drain all the oil out...(brand new oil!! lol) and put 10w-30 synthetic, and see if that fixes the problem... sounds kinda weird but the new oil makes much better pressure then the old oil did...meening it must be quite a bit thicker, sooo im thinking if I put a lighter synthetic in it might actually pump up the hydraulic lifters better... I duno sounds kinda backwards but maybe it'll work...

Mine has less valvetrain noise with synthetic in it. Friend I just bought it from said the manual actually called for 5w30 synthetic. Havent looked myself.

I agree with the 87, you don't need the premium. BG44K is good to use, cleans everything out in your fuel system. Marvel sometimes will cause more problems than it's worth. Sea foam is good also.
