I know for a fact that the XJ once came with a tire carrier on the back, but to this day I have still never seen one in person. Did Jeep offer the option in the US or only in other countries? If they were in the US, if I ever see one at a JY I'm snatching it right up.

 

I seen a couple here where i live. And there was in the junkyard a few months back for 20$, but i didnt care for the look.

 

I've never seen an OEM one either, all of them look custom or Aftermarket. I'm sure the instant one hits the JY, it's stripped within a few days since they seem to rare.

 

No, it was an option at least with AMC.

They're not real pretty, but they are heavy duty.

I always thought there was an OEM version. I know they make plenty of aftermarket ones. But if I could find an original one and just transfer the bumper and supports onto my jeep, that would be much easier and cheaper. haha. Over here in PA I've never seen one. Only ever on tv.

 

AMC, so that means I could probably swap one over from another 89? Cuz chrysler didn't really do anything till 92. Dumb chrysler gettin rid of the comanche. Wtf!?

Yeah and the liberty that replaced it was a POS flop, haha. Chrysler ruined jeep. The only jeep left with a front and rear straight axle 4x4 was the wrangler after that. Everything else was independent. To me, a straight axle is the way to go for wheeling. We need articulation, not a smooth ride.

 

Although, the SRT-8 grands are pretty badass

 

Jeeps are fat spoiled SUVs now... Too bad AMC died. Infact i can't think of ANY old truck designs that Chrysler hasn't ruined.

 

Like this one used the license plate area for the lock assembly and bolted to the bumper. So this one you drilled the holes on the bumper and aligh the one on the hatch and done. The other style used the side pass side like the broncos and lock was in the bumper

 

I agree, chrysler ruined many things.

I saw two styles. the one above which looks like it just bolts to the bumper and one with a side fender mount. That one seems like it would need some reinforcements.

Other than that just relocating the license plate and light.

For the one that is shown, it just bolt to bumper and the lock part sits in the license plate ane has had a backing plate that sandwish the hatch. The other style is similar but not as big plate that spreads the load out
