Default OEM speedo and tach shutting off randomly!

While driving my 97 Jeep Cherokee the speedometer and tachometer all the sudden just dropped to zero while doing 50mph. And then all the sudden came back on 2 min later while still driving. I havent really had a chance to explore yet because it happend in the dark. Any ideas?

I plan on taking everything apart and looking for loose/dirty connections. Is this something that's common with XJ's? 180,000k miles by the way.

Thanks.

Issues with the connectors are pretty common n XJ's ad TJ's. Pull the cluster and clean the connectors good. Also it helps to tweak the pins on the vehicle side slightly for better contact will help as well.

Had the same problems. I just got up in there and cleaned all the wires and hasn't given me any trouble since

My buddy had the same problem. We checked the connectors and nothing was wrong with them. Eventually he replaced his battery because it was on the fritz and the cluster started working just fine. Just something else to look at.

My 98 XJ does the same this once in a while. I just give the dash above the gauges a few light hits and they come back on.
