Default Odd grinding/ratteling sound from NP231 Transfer case while in neutral?

Hello folks... I've recently noticed an odd grinding/rattling/clicking sound that happens when you put the transfer case in neutral and then put the transmission in gear. I recorded a video that demonstrates this:

The vehicle in question here is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with the 5 Speed Manual (AX15, I think) and the NP231 part-time transfer case. In all of my research, I haven't found any words about rather or not this was normal for the transfer case, or if it was a sign of something wrong in the transmission or transfer case.

Is this normal for this transfer case? Or is it a sign of some sort of creeping issues in the driveline? Could it always be making that noise and I just don't notice it while driving because of the road and engine noise?

Have you checked the fluid level in the TC?

If okay, it may be the chain making noise [?]

That's a fair question, but I don't really have a good way of checking at the moment. The fill plug is (at least a bit) rounded off on the transfer case, so I don't have a good way of removing it. There doesn't appear to be any leaks in the transfer case, so I would presume that it has lubricant inside, but it's worth checking at some point.

Should the chain even be turning when the transfer case is in neutral?
