Default OBD2 reader scanner not reading my XJ.

I bought a code reader awhile back and threw it on the XJ. All other cars it loads quickly then I can scan it for.codes. but he XJ starts to load...there's a loading bar. Then pretty much stops. Only gets a quarter of the way. Idk if I need to let it sit for awhile or what. Any one have this happen? I don't have a check engine light. Oh and its a 96 XJ .4.0 ho auto. Thanks.

My guess is a fuse might be out, that is all I can think of.

Your scanner doesn't read OBD1 apparently.

I thought all 96 and up vehicles had obd 2. Some 95 model years depending on production date. Just what I thought. So that would make mine obd 2. I think the fuse thing might be the problem. I'll need to check...

Okay. You proved the scanner is a known good tool and the OBD debate is over. It's time for the issue at hand ie no communication with a scanner. I had this experience with my '99.

I suggest a close inspection of OBD connector contacts. Cleaning may help and it is worthwhile action for inspection purposes. Also, check integrity of each contact's wire- crimp by tugging each wire (not too hard, about a one pound tug is good). Recrimp or solder any wires/contacts that release (may get another connector a JY if necessary). Good Luck.

Well all wiring is fine. Fuse is good. But I did find this....a plug what wasn't plugged in....havnt plugged it in tho. I have a bulldog or whatever security system with remote start and all that. Didn't know if this needed to be unplugged for that. There is a white tag on it with the letter G. And a blue tag.

The other end is there. So i can plug it in. Any ideas on what this plug does? When I get to work ill grab someone else's scanner and see if it works. Not sure why mine won't.

Update. Fuses good. Wiring good. It will sit and "load" while the jeep is running. I'd I turn it off but leave it in the ON position. It cycles through a few screens then says failed to connect. Anybody? I let it sit for 20 minutes. Didn't move.

I know this thread is 3 years old but did you have any luck? I have the same issue. I know my CEL is on bc of my down stream o2 sensor, but when I plugged in my buddies brand new snapon OBDI/OBDII scanner it says cannot connect. My wires are fine. Does anyone know which fuse it would be that relays to the port?
