Default O2 sensors replaced but check engine light came back on

Saundra Hamilton , Today 03:07 AM
I'm having hard time guys....any help I appreciate
2007 jeep grand cherokee laredo. I'm down over $1000 last week. 1st shop said even though code says it's o2 sensors you need water pump, thermostat, hoses belts. Ok . Drive out and still check engine light on and then hesitates and rough idle and light flashes, no power and then jolts forward. Towed back. Can't find issue. Sorry. 2nd shop yesterday. O2 sensors need replacing. Not sure why they replaced water pump and thermostat because one o2 sensors wires were
melted to exhaust manifold, other one was heater something. Drive out....felt better right away. Drove fine. No check engine light. Did start to feel like it was going to act up but it didnt. Got home, about hour later, start up and there it is again, check engine light back on. Isnt hesitating , no rough idle or loss of power, light isnt flashing again .....did I just get taken by 2nd shop and can expect it to be flashing and misfiring soon? I am an amputee so the fear of breaking down and not being able to walk to help is a bit scary....I just need to try and figure out what I tell mechanics to check next before they get every penny I have. Any suggestions? Replaced both o2 sensors today.

ps shop #1...water pump guy....right before he said sorry don't know he said it's probably your computer . Does anyone think that is it? If so I'm fairly sure my jeep will be staying in driveway for a while and uber will have a daily customer! I just know if I had a little more knowledge to go back to shop with I'd have no problem helping them help me!

Take it to Autozone and have them read the code. It may not be the same thing - not that that will make you feel any better. Once you have the code(s) and folks here can help you proceed.

I'd think you got taken (possibly) by mechanic 1 - though it's possible you did need the new pump etc.
Mechanic 2 can't necessarily be faulted, probably. The codes indicated bad O2 sensors... if they were melting against the header then yes, you needed new sensors. The mechanic wouldn't have been able necessarily to predict the new codes.

If you just have a code (in other words, not flashing) you *should* be able to drive it, at least to Autozone or Advance or whatever parts retailer is close to you.

It's possible the computer is bad, it's possible that the water pump needed to be done, it's possible I'll hit the lottery tomorrow.

Start with getting the current codes and go from there. If it's running ok, I wouldn't panic - just take it a step at a time.

thank you. I apologize I didn't see it was on a old thread. plus I don't know what I'm doing as if that wasn't obvious huh?
I appreciate your reply. I called shop that changed my o2 sensors and he said exact same thing. I'm going by this afternoon for him to check codes again and see what's up. light isn't flashing and car seems to be running good.
I'll post the codes. on the new thread thanks again!

It can take a while (a few or more startup cycles) for the check engine light to go away after a code has been cleared, if the car is running fine and you O2 sensors are new, I wouldn't worry too much.

Only symptom I had that my O2's were bad was my fuel mileage went south. No CEL at any time which isn't unusual.
