Default NV3550 Behind AMC 150?

Hey, guys. Talking about the '93 down below here....The AX-5 in it has crapped out again. This is the second one we've had in it (had it rebuilt) and now it's grinding into every gear, the worst being 1st and 3rd. I know it's a pretty weak transmission, especially since we like to do quite a bit of four wheeling.

Not gonna be able to afford replacing it for a little while, probably a month or so, but I wanna know what I can replace it with. I know the AX-15 is a relatively straight forward swap, but I've heard a lot of good things about the NV3550.

I haven't done a whole lot of research yet, but I just wanna know what you all think of swapping it in behind my little 4 popper. I'm still gonna be looking into it more, but just looking for opinions. Thanks guys!

The nv3550 is same work to swap in as a ax15 would be. Ive had mixed opinions weather the Ax15 and Nv3550 bell housings were interchangeable . I scored a Nv complete and installed in my 89 have had no complaints almost a year now.

Oh, cool! Anything you remember right off hand you had to modify or anything? I can use the bellhousing off the AX, right?

Mine was ba/10 so it will be a little different im sure. Gonna need different tc case 23 spline not 21. My crossmember had to be moved back to rear set of holes ,there already there from factory. There no jeep xj ax15 4cyl bell housing here lies the issue. The interweb says the 4cyl Dakota one works but cant confirm it. Also gotta use external slave set up which on Dakota its on pass side not on drivers like 4.0 .

Biggest thing you'll need is an adapter plate. The 4-150 engine uses the "GM Metric" bellhousing pattern (same as the Chevrolet V6-60, its contemporary,) and the 6-242 uses the AMC I6/V8 pattern.

You should be able to find an adapter plate at Novak or Advance Adapters - I don't have the necessary information to allow you to fabricate one, or I'd offer it.

I do not know if AX-4/5 and AX-15 bellhousings mount to the case in the same way (I mention that because the NV3550 derives a good deal of its design from the AX-15, I think they even use the same bellhousing...)
