Default Nuetral safety switch nut uncooperative

I'm trying to remove the neutral safety switch, but can't get the large nut to come off, even though I can turn it by hand. Probably stripped threads..... Any ideas??

Actually, it is. You can't disassemble the NSS with the nut on. You don't need to have it off in order to remove the NSS from the transmission and in the link provided by ol"blue, the poster actually uses the nut as a pry point. However, if you plan on doing anything inside of your NSS, you'll need to get that nut off, just as the poster in the link eventually did.

My suggestion would be to remove the NSS with the nut on and then reevaluate your options when you can see it more comfortably and clearly. Unfortunately, the pinch mechanism is made of either aluminum or cheap metal and if you've stripped the threads on the lever it may bet time for a trip to the junk yard.

Yeah, I had looked at that website earlier, but he had unscrewed the nut enough to slide a flathead screwdriver underneath for prying. I can't get mine to unscrew that far.

That's my dilemna, I think the aluminum threads are messed up.

The NSS was either worked on or replaced before, as the zip ties were cut. The NSS is also loose behind the nut. I tried pulling it off by hand, but there must be a bit of a grip caused by the nut.

I wonder if someone over-tightened it at some point and stripped the threads. I would try wedging a sharp flat head between the nut and lock washer while using a wrench or socket to back the nut off. It may catch on usable threads and back right off.

I tried that, without any luck. I thought about hacksawing the nut off, but wondered if I could get a replacement very easily....

That nut is a special nut with a couple of threads and a relief cut in the back for a shoulder on the housing of the NSS it self. The threads on the NSS and the nut get stripped out very easily. IMO, prying on that nut to remove the NSS is a very bad idea.

Get the NSS out by gently prying behind it. Search for methods to remove the unit for more detail. Once it's out you can probably cut the nut off and clean the threads up. Replacement nut will probably have to come from a junkyard.

I tried pulling on the NSS body, but didn't have any luck. I sprayed the shaft, but not sure how well it penetrated, with the nut still in the way. I think there's enough space (barely) to get a hacksaw onto the nut, but a bit worried about finding a replacement nut.

You can always find a new NSS online. I ended up braking mine taking it off on the 97 and got a new one for about $50 from carpartswholesale.com

Has the NSS housing moved away from the bell housing at all? They are notoriously difficult to get off that shaft. It took me 45 minutes of patient determination to get mine to wiggle off.

If the nut is spinning easily on the shaft then it's no longer exerting pressure on the pinch mechanism and your NSS will come off.

I used some emery cloth and cleaned up the indicator shaft then sprayed it with penetrating oil and used a lot of muscle to pry it off.
