Default NSS Switch ? or Tranny problems

1998 cherokee - 6 cyl - P0700 and 1899 code
cleaned nss switch - still had P0700 - removed switch again - tried to adjust it - same problem - so I bought a new NSS switch - still have P0700 code coming up - nothing else - just that code - I have backup lites - but I can start it in drive or in reverse or any gear - and this is with the new switch - So I dropped the oil pan - changed transmission filter - replace with new ATF - problem seems to be gone - so far no more codes but I can still start the car in any gear - is there anything else besides the NSS switch I should be looking at?

Other problem is the cruise won't set - dash lite comes on but won't set on any speed - replaced the throttle postion sensor- didn't help - any ideas?

Hey Randy, I checked my '99 FSM and that P0700 code points at the tranny control module (at-least that's how I translated it). You be the judge - it reads like it was written by super-geek:

"P0700 / EATX Controller DTC Present / This SBEC III or JTEC DTC indicates that the EATX or Aisin controller has an active fault and has illuminated the MIL via a CCD (EATX) or SCI (Aisin) message. The specific fault must be acquired from the EATX via CCD or from the Aisin via ISO-9141."

I think you can't set your cruise control because of the defect in the NSS circuit (i.e., you normally can't set cruise while in neutral or park - right?). The fact that you can start in any gear makes me think that the NSS circuit is shorted. Follow the cable from the NSS connector to inspect for pinch. You might want to first determine the presence of a short circuit then monitor for a discontinuity with an ohmmeter while manipulating the cable.

Thanks for the help - I'll do that on Saturday - it makes sense to me - can't be the switch - its new - light really only goes on when cold - if I clear the code after she has run for a while and warms up - the cel never comes on - but when it drive her cold - I get that d**n code -
so guessam getting somewhere.

Default Thanks Cherryokee!! You helped me finally fix it

after looking at 100`s of postings - cleaning the nss switch twice then replacing it - replacing the tps and hours of frustration - when I read your
reply I started to really look hard at the wiring - I finally found a small wire that was spliced into a wire coming from the main fuse box under the hood. It didn`t look factory to me - some off the loom was cut and just didn`t look right - so I cut off the splice that was grounded to the frame.
now it only starts in park - the cruise works perfectly and the cel does not come on anymore - I can only assume that a mechanic had bypassed the NSS by grounding it out from the fuse box - now everything works great - Thanks for your help!

Hey Randy, Congrats! Glad I could help. It's funny how easily we sometimes get into that mode where we basically chase our own tails, repeating the same sequence of steps, when all we really needed to do was take a step back and resort to a simple/patient/methodical walk-through. That frustrated-frenzied mode of operation causes serious skinned knuckles, time, and expense.

Riddle me this; Why do you suppose that a "mechanic" (not really) would have hacked/grounded that circuit? The answer could be a view into the history of your Jeep and knowing the answer could save you from potential future ugly "surprises"!

Default Thanks Cherrokee

I talked to my son-in-law - he gave me the cherokee- he remembers taking it into the Land Rover dealer as he had one of those too, and knew the mechanic - so I figure the mechanic either was to lazy to remove and clean the nss or didn't know how to - anyway he probably bypassed it to save time and money - and didn't realize that it would effect the backup lights and cruise - my son-in-law figured it was around that time that the cel came on - since he never used cruise it wasn't an issue - he knew his backup lights didn't work but never connected everything together - hid check engine light was on for 3 years but
he said since the xj was running good he didn't worry about it.

now everything works great! - if fees good that we found the problem - once again thanks for your help
