So, I had the XJ triple-header this weekend. My flashers stopped working, the NSS wouldn't allow the XJ to start and I have a broken rear shock.
As always, the flasher relay was easy. $10 relay from Advanced Auto and it was working. Then on to the NSS...
Well, I was going to try to rebuild it, but it wouldn't move at all. I basically had to just break it into 50 pieces, then grab the rotor connector with visegrips and yank it off. I tried to pry on the nut, but the rotor threads hold zero torque and the nut jumps threads very easy. Once I got most of the plastic out of the way, I grabbed the back of the rotor connector and it would move with ease, until the end, when the previously mentioned vise grabs were used.
Getting it back on was just as difficult. I couldn't push it on, so I got a small headed hammer and tapped on it to get it to sit flush with the rod that pokes out of the transmission. Then I laid a screwdriver handle across the housing to disperse the force across the housing and tapped the handle with the hammer. It finally went back on. Adjusting it confuses me however. I went through the entire range and no matter what, it still won't start in N. I have to pull the lever back almost to D, then it will start. It doesn't start in D however. I adjusted it to start in P, then to where the reverse lights come on, but again, I couldn't get it to do all three. I just left it. I never start in N anyway. Is that a problem?
Lastly, I need to change the rear shocks. I know I'm going to bust all four bolts so I just left it for now. I'm not looking forward to this AT ALL!
What a pain. I'm without a doubt a true XJ owner at this point. If the XJ has a known problem, my XJ has it. I still need to caulk up the blower motor too. I'm sick of having t-shirts on the floorboards to soak up the H2O.
