Default NP242 operating temperature?

Does anyone know what the normal operating temperature is for a NP242? Mine is hot to the touch even after a short drive. Just installed a Iron Rock sye hack'n'tap and now have a different vibration. When looking at ujoints I noticed the transfer case and front portion of driveshaft was to hot to touch comfortably. Is this normal? I Used a stock front driveshaft for rear.

Yeah, they run hot. Wouldn't hurt to check the fluid, ATF+4.

Just changed fluid, I'll double check the level. Took only about 1.25 quarts to fill which didn't seem right. Would be kinda cool to put a cooler on it, do the Hummers use a remote pump or something?

It doesn't hold much, I can't remember but it's less than 2 qts.

From what I understand, the return line from the transmission cooler goes through a finned tube that is mounted in the transfercase and wicks the heat away. The transfer case fluid never leaves the case.

Other people have done remote pumps. Google returns some interesting stuff

It's definitely one of those things to fill and forget. They are pretty tough and a lot simpler than the transmission or motor. I say let her roll...

The 242 case temperature operates at 135-145F on my rig. Front driveshaft gets stupid hot due to location.
