NP231 stuck in 4 low

my np231 t case is stuck in 4 low any ideas?

clockwise 05-04-2011 10:28 AM

???still no luck

its_deer_not_jeep 05-04-2011 10:30 AM

stuck as in what you cant move the nob or stuck as in it wont disengage?

LongArmXJ 05-04-2011 10:32 AM

have you gotten under it and looked at the linkage? try rolling the vehicle back and forth a little to see if it frees up as you are trying to put the lever into another position. if that doesnt work then pull the linkage off (under vehicle)and try to manually pull it.

its_deer_not_jeep 05-04-2011 10:33 AM

yeah um you might want to put it in 2 wheel drive and roll back probably 20 feet and see if that will pop it out

LongArmXJ 05-04-2011 10:35 AM

yea if you linkage is working properly then try rolling in reverse like he said. if that doesnt work then drive it into a tree and part it out.

clockwise 05-04-2011 10:35 AM

it wont go out of 4 wheel drive....
i tried backing up and fourth multiple times

LongArmXJ 05-04-2011 10:37 AM

lol i like that lol

ok so if its stuck throw it in neutral and use a little bit more force see what happens and also check to see if you might have smashed your linkage

Sometimes mine will stick... happens cause I don't use 4Lo much. :hammer:
  • Get to a level surface
  • Roll forward between 1-5mph
  • put trans in neutral (still rolling)
  • firmly push the transfer case shift lever all the way up into 2wd
  • put trans back into gear

its_deer_not_jeep 05-04-2011 10:41 AM

grind them gears sun!

LongArmXJ 05-04-2011 10:43 AM

I have found this to be the best way to get it to release...
Drive to your local freeway.. get to the on ramp. . floor it. get up to about 65 mph. (might be a little higher rpms than normal) then throw it in park. as you put it in park try moving the 4wd lever to 2 wd. this should free it up. if not try checking your tire pressure.

razor02097 05-04-2011 10:46 AM

If your jeep can get up to 65mph in 4Lo then kudos...

Don't do this.....It will realese all right......a buncha nuts and bolts and your tranny. But I guess that would be out of 4 lo!!!lol wtf?

gotstungbybees 05-08-2011 10:03 AM

my girlfriends jeep tj was stuck in 4 lo and it ended up being the "mode" fork had melted due to lack of lubrication( dont trust dealers that say it was fully serviced)...it was in 4 lo no matter what range it was in

Or your headlight fluid is low.....

99 Purple XJ 05-08-2011 12:14 PM

Its your brake lines you dont have the right ones you need cross drilled brake lines so when you hit the brake pedal it lubricates every thing nicely

2K1XJ 05-08-2011 12:54 PM

Seriously...try this...park on level spot...put transmission in neutral...turn off engine...use a little force and throw t-case lever into 2WD...start engine and see if that works...if not, check linkages as others have said. If you don't use 4LO often or if you have a t-case drop (and haven't modified linkages) this will sometimes happen...especially if you are not on level ground.
