NP 231 jumps out of gear, etc.
My '95 XJ 4.0L, AW4, NP231 is really difficult to shift into 4WD unless I put it into Park, turn off the engine, and then shift it. Recently it started jumping out of gear. At first, it was just once in a while. When it jumps out of 4WD (usually 4L) I have nothing, it's like the transmission is in Neutral.
Last Sunday it did it again. Today, it won't stay in 4WD at all, in any 4X4 position. When I shift it into 4L, it will pull for maybe five seconds and then jumps out. There is lube in the TC up to the filler hole. If I try to put it into 4WD with the engine running it grinds big time, no matter whether it's in Park, Neutral or Drive.
It runs great in 2H, no problem at all.
I'm thinking I've got big trouble. Anybody?

You probably just need ot adjust the linkage. There is an adjustment bolt, or allen bolt on the upper part of the linkage under neath. Put it in low range, loose the bolt, then make sure with a pair of channel locks that it is really in, then tighten the bolt.
